Figurative Ice Age Art of Europe

01:02

The art dating to the Palaeolithic have been newly carved to their original size and in their original material. The reconstructed figures were created in close cooperation between scientists from the University of Tübingen and the mammoth ivory carvers. A total of 23 figures are on display, 21 of which can be touched. In addition to figures made of mammoth ivory, there are also those made of amber, soapstone, jet and clay.

The objects selected for the travelling exhibition cover the entire artistic spectrum of Ice Age figures. At the beginning of the Ice Age, 42,000 years before present, animal figures were often depicted, then later they included also women. With the further development of Ice Age art, the female figures eventually become more and more abstract in their depiction.
