We are pleased to welcome you to the exhibition “Primal Forms. Ice Age Art at Your Fingertips”.

Art has been a part of human history for at least 40,000 years. This exhibition allows you to experience the changes in small Ice Age figures using several senses.

Modern humans migrated to Central Europe around 42,000 years ago. During the Ice Age that prevailed at that time, winters were long and cold, while summers were dry, short and cooler than today. It was during this climatic period that Ice Age Art was created.

But how has this art been preserved until today? The oldest small sculptures known so far come from the Swabian Jura. The first archaeological excavations began here 160 years ago. They continue to this day, and their results help us to better understand the Upper Palaeolithic period. The artistic objects were found together with numerous everyday objects in the sediments at the entrance to the caves. The Ice Age Art of the Swabian Jura is so significant, that six of the caves were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2017.

Travel with us through 30,000 years of Ice Age art history! We hope you make exciting discoveries and have lots of fun!
